Happy new calendar year to you, my faithful readers. AIt must be said with some joy that the evening of December 31st 2009, my blog exceeded 1000 viewing figures. It was possibly the best day of my life, which possibly says more about my life so far.
Today's blog contains all manner of fun and frivolity designed to help usher in the first year of the 'ten-sies', maybe the 'twenty-teens'. No idea what idiotic name they're going to label this decade but I don't live in expectation.
Woah! Rant over, I promise.
Anyways, today's blog contains not only an album review but also music to look forward to this coming year. 'Awesome!' I hear you cry. Yes, yes it is!
First on my list is an album review, last entry I mentioned London metal trio, Invasion. I also may have hinted that I like their music and that they'd released an album 'The Master Alchemist', recorded in five days and raw with a sludgy sound. Well, here's the official Audio Flare review.
Invasion - 'The Master Alchemist'.
What I liked:
A brilliant mix of sounds and styles that meshes perfectly. Psychadelic metal, sludge, doom, almost 'Skunk Anansie' style vocals. Very impressive medley. Very innovative too, sounding both familiar yet so radically different you can't think of a single band that sounds like them.
Deliberately underproduced sound augments the raw, gritty, down-tuned style of the music. This is a raw, hard hitting 21 minutes of an album.
No frivolities here either, very little build up, no solos, this is just minute after minute track of brilliant metal.
What I didn't like:
Because each song is so short, the stupidly catchy songs are over too soon.
My Score for 'The Master Alchemist' 3/3. Buy this album. Now!
This is retro, trashy, catchy, unconventional and fantastic.
Next we move onto a smattering of albums being released this year, designed purely to whet ye musical appetites. There are many very exciting albums that are going be released in the year ahead and here will be a few of them:
MGMT: 'Congratulations', due Spring 2010.
You should be excited because: First album 'Oracular Spectacular', whilst not perfect, contained enough fantastic material to be damn good. Including 'Kids', 'Electric Feel' and 'Time to Pretend'. Reckon their next album should certainly be something to be excited about. New tracks have only been performed live so far, no single releases.
Justice: To Be Announced but sometime in 2010.
You should be excited because: Literally every song on their debut 'Cross' was incredible. Literally, every song. 'Phantom pt 2', 'Waters of Nazareth' and so on. Get this when it comes.
Pendulum: 'Immersion', May 2010
You should be excited because: It's gorram Pendulum. 'Slam'. A one word argument. Drum n Bass greats making a third album? You'd be thick as three bricks if you weren't at least a little excited.
Portishead: Title To Be Announced but sometime 'late 2010'.
You should be excited because: Possibly one of the greatest bands of the last 20 years. Three, brilliant albums already in their back catalogue. Recent song 'Chase the Tear' shows they've still got the magic.
Fear Factory: 'Mechanize', expected February 9th, 2010.
You should be excited because: Genre defining industrial metal band re-united with guitaring great. With new drummer that sound like the old drummer. A re-invention of their old styles perhaps? Single 'Powershifter' would suggest so.
Ellie Goulding: To Be Announced, expect it sometime in the first quarter of 2010.
You should be excited because: Pretty much everyone else is. Expect big things. Songs include 'Under the Sheets' and 'Starry Eyed'. Both songs are getting remixed to almighty too, including Jackwob's dubstep remix of 'Under the Sheets'. Brill.
That's all for now. I promise.
I leave you with the ultimate gift for the new year,
Dizzee Rascal performing 'Stand Up Tall' to Nirvana's 'Smells like Teens Spirit'.
Now bugger off! See you Tuesday.
